Garbage/Bulk Waste/Recycling

Garbage and Bulk Waste are picked up in Riverview and Colonial Place every Thursday.  Recycling pickup occurs every other Thursday.  Cans should be placed at the curb between 5 pm Wednesday and 7 am Thursday.  Too early on Wednesday is unsightly and too late on Thursday morning risks missing pick-up.  The City is very specific about how and where you place your green garbage can:

  • cans must be positioned at least 6 feet from cars, poles or other obstructions;
  • the metal bar should be facing the street and the wheels facing your residence;
  • the lid must be closed;
  • once your trash can has been emptied you must remove it from the street no later than 11:30 pm that same Thursday;
  • all receptacles must be stored at least 5 feet behind the front building line of your home or screened from view.

What can you put in your green garbage can?  Bagged household garbage and trash are allowed in your trash can.

The following types of refuse are NOT allowed in your green garbage can:

  • yard waste
  • furniture and appliances
  • doors and windows
  • tires
  • electronics
  • household hazardous wastes
  • recycling

Yard Waste – Let’s Be Clear

Yard Waste (leaves, grass clippings, branches, dead plants, etc.) should be put at the curb (not in the street) on your regular trash day:

  • place leaves and grass in clear plastic bags or 30-gallon containers;
  • limbs and branches must be trimmed and tied into bundles no more than 4 feet long and no more than 18 inches in diameter;
  • up to 20 clear plastic bags/bundles may be set out each collection day.

Bulk Waste – Do You Have A Reservation?

Bulk Waste includes large items that cannot go in your garbage can and are not accepted for recycling, such as:

  • tires (up to 4 tires per household per month)
  • wooden and glass doors and windows
  • bicycles, large toys
  • furniture and appliances
  • household items

The main difference between Bulk Waste and other forms of refuse is that you must CALL to schedule a Bulk Waste Pickup.  Bulk Waste is picked up on your regular trash day (Thursday) after you have called to schedule a pick-up.

To arrange for a collection of bulk waste

Your request must be submitted no later than 3:00 pm the day before your regularly scheduled trash pick-up (so for CPRV, no later than 3:00 pm Wednesday afternoon).
