Our December 9th General Members Meeting featured an informative presentation by Citizens for Responsible Lighting (CRL), led by Lori Baccanari. CRL provided an overview of the ongoing transition to LED street lighting in Norfolk, highlighting the importance of responsible implementation to avoid potential hazards. Their presentation underscored the impact of different LED color temperatures on public health, safety, and the environment.
Key Takeaways from the CRL Presentation:
Energy Efficiency: LEDs use up to 85% less energy than traditional lighting systems.
Visibility and Safety: LEDs offer clearer illumination, but high-Kelvin, blue-spectrum lights can increase glare and reduce nighttime safety.
Environmental Concerns: Blue-spectrum LEDs can disrupt sleep patterns, harm wildlife, and obscure the night sky.
Recommendations: Experts recommend streetlights with a Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) of 3000K or lower for safer, warmer lighting.

We were also joined by Officer Brenton Blakeslee, our Community Resource Officer, who provided the latest crime report and offered tips to keep yourself and your belongings safe during the holiday season:
Lock Your Doors: Ensure your home and vehicle doors are always locked and avoid leaving holiday purchases in the vehicle, especially in plain view.
Package Safety: Schedule deliveries for times when you are home or use secure pickup locations.
Stay Vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings, especially while shopping or traveling after dark. Avoid carrying too much cash on you and stay in well-lit areas.
