CPRV History: 4801 Newport Ave

4801 Newport Avenue was built in 1910 by Dr. John Wyche Manning and his wife, Jennie. Dr. Manning was born in Alabama in 1868, the only son of eight siblings, and graduated from Atlanta Dental College in 1898 as President of his class.

In 1901 he moved to Norfolk and opened a dental office in the Bank of Commerce Building, where he practiced for the next 35 years.

He was instrumental in building the Christian Temple at 34th and Llewellyn, which now sits abandoned.

He and his wife had two daughters and a son. His son, Wymer Manning, was also a local dentist.
